Crocodile of the Yangzi

Historien om den unga engelskaläraren Jack Ma, som skapade ett av världens största handelsimperium är lika underhållande som imponerande.

Like Rockefeller, Mr Ma spotted a confluence of technologies and market opportunities. The rise of the internet came just as China was gearing up to join the World Trade Organisation in 2001

Alibaba’s story so far has been one of canny innovation and a clear focus on how to win competitive advantage in China. “EBay may be a shark in the ocean,” Mr Ma once said, “but I am a crocodile in the Yangzi river. If we fight in the ocean, we lose; but if we fight in the river, we win.”

Walmart.com’s search engine epitomized its failure. “Executives at Walmart — at the board level — were running searches and saying, ‘This is embarrassing,’” says Sri Subramaniam, the WalmartLabs exec who ran the rebuilding effort. If you used Walmart.com’s old search engine to check out “smartphones,” you’d get links to a couple of cell-phone chargers, not the iPhone. A “cotton socks” query returned results for cotton candy and balls of yarn.

The Lessons From the Kindle’s Success

You can’t underestimate the miracle that happens when you make something really easy for people. Easy means fast, better than the old way and with very few annoying disappointments and delays. The Kindle device is a better way to carry lots of books (at least for some). Shopping is easy, with very few steps. And Amazon’s relationship with publishers has created a very broad library of Kindle books. Sure, there are lots of books you can’t buy for it, but the disappointment factor is low.
